MISCARRIAGE AND ACUPUNCTURE
“From a traditional Chinese medicine point of view, if there is weakness in the body where the body isn’t at its optimum health, miscarriage is more likely to occur as the mother needs to be healthy to nourish the foetus.”
THE BENEFITS OF ACUPUNCTURE
Suffering from a miscarriage can be a very stressful and traumatic event. It can physically affect your body as well as your soul. Acupuncture may be beneficial to regulate the body hormones (1). This may be particularly beneficial after a dilation and curettage (D&C) to prepare your body for your next pregnancy.
Since acupuncture has been shown to have immune modulating effects (2)(3), this may play an important action on reducing the chances of the mother’s immune system rejecting the embryo in the early days of pregnancy.
Ideally, from 4 weeks-12 weeks, weekly treatments may optimize maternal health to sustain and stabilise the pregnancy. Research also shows that regular monitoring and reassurance reduces miscarriages rates in some patients. (4)
